Fossil fuels' future
 
In the global tug of war over climate policies, the oil and gas industry has found itself on both sides of the rope. Though gas is often billed as a climate-friendlier alternative to coal and a backup to intermittent renewable power sources, the fuel is increasingly meeting rejection as states adopt more carbon-aggressive policies, municipalities pursue gas bans and the sector's social contract faces uncertainty. Oil majors, meanwhile, are increasingly pursuing renewable power assets, balancing out their more carbon-intensive assets with more publicly palatable infrastructure.
