Janus Capital Group Directors Name Gary Black to Board and Declare Annual Dividend

   Janus Stockholders Elect Three Directors and Approve Appointment
                      of Independent Accountants

Janus Capital Group Inc. (NYSE: JNS) today announced that the company's president and chief investment officer, Gary D. Black, has been appointed to the board of directors effective immediately.

Black, 44, was named president and CIO in March 2004. Prior to joining Janus, Black served as chief investment officer for Goldman Sachs Asset Management's (GSAM) Global Equities business and was a top-ranked analyst at Sanford Bernstein. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor's degree in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Additionally today, Janus Capital Group shareholders approved all items under consideration at the company's annual meeting. Janus Capital Group shareholders:

    --  Elected three directors to the company's board of directors:
        G. Andrew Cox, 60; James P. Craig, 47; and Deborah Gatzek, 55.
        Each was elected for a three-year term expiring in 2007; and

    --  Approved the appointment of Deloitte & Touche LLP as
        independent accountants.

Separately, the Janus Capital Group board of directors today declared an annual dividend of $0.04 per share payable July 30, 2004, to stockholders of record on July 15, 2004. The $0.04 per share dividend is the same amount paid in July 2003.
