Senior Officers
JAMES V. BACCHETTA Vice President, Atlanta
Jim oversees a portfolio of 6.3 million square feet. He has over 20 years of experience in commercial and industrial real estate finance, acquisitions, development, leasing, and property management. Before joining Highwoods in 2005, Jim was a private real estate investor and the owner of a national transportation company. Jim also served as vice president of acquisitions with Consolidated Resources Corporation, and the director of acquisitions for Anderson Properties. Prior to his real estate career, Jim was a Certified Public Accountant with Price Waterhouse for four years. He is a member of NAIOP and the Urban Land Institute and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University.
DANIEL L. CLEMMENS Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer
Prior to joining Highwoods in 2007, Dan was a senior manager with Ernst & Young LLP in Atlanta for 13 years. Dan has extensive experience in the real estate industry, having led Ernst & Young’s audit engagement teams focusing on a variety of public REITs, including Highwoods. Dan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University and is a Certified Public Accountant. Dan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
RICK DEHNERT III Vice President, Triad
Rick oversees a portfolio of almost four and a half million square feet, including office and industrial properties in Greensboro and Winston Salem. Rick joined Highwoods in 1995 as a leasing representative and was promoted to director of leasing for the Triad Division in 1999. Rick is past President of the Triad chapter of NAIOP and currently serves on the National Board of NAIOP; board member of the Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition (TREBIC); Developers Council; and board member of the Heart of the Triad Stakeholders Committee. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University.
S. HUGH ESLEECK Treasurer
Hugh is directly responsible for the budget group, $400 million credit facility and $70 million construction facility. He is also responsible for Highwoods secured lenders and the rating agencies, as well as non-GAAP reporting. Prior to joining the Company over ten years ago, he spent eight years with The Wyatt Company in the treasury group. Hugh earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lynchburg College and a Master of Business Administration from Virginia Tech.
EDWARD J. FRITSCH President, Chief Executive Officer and Director
Ed is president and chief executive officer of Highwoods Properties and has been a director since 2001. Joining Highwoods in 1982, Ed was a partner in the predecessor firm which launched its initial public offering in 1994. In 2004, Ed assumed the role of CEO. He is chairman of the Investment Committee.
Mr. Fritsch serves as a director of National Retail Properties, Inc. a retail REIT. He also serves as a member of the NAREIT board of governors and its executive committee, director and immediate past president of the YMCA of the Triangle, director and member of the audit committee of Capital Associated Industries, Inc., a nonprofit employers’ association, and a member of Wells Fargo Bank’s central region advisory board. Mr. Fritsch is also a member of the boards of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Foundation, the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Ravenscroft School and is past chair of the University of North Carolina board of visitors.
STEVEN J. GARRITY Vice President, Orlando
Steve oversees a portfolio of two million square feet of office space. He joined Highwoods in 1996 and, until January 2009, was director of leasing in the Company’s Tampa division. Steve began his real estate career in Florida with Towermarc Corporation in 1989. He serves on the board of NAIOP’s Central Florida Chapter, he is chair of NAIOP’s Economic Development Council, and in Leadership Orlando Class 81. Steve earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Skidmore College.
STEVEN L. GUINN Vice President, Memphis
Steve oversees a portfolio of almost two million square feet. He has over 26 years of experience in commercial real estate, development, leasing, marketing and finance. Prior to joining Highwoods in 2004, he was senior vice president of Trammell Crow Company, overseeing the Memphis Office Brokerage and Leasing Division. Steve received the Pinnacle Award as Memphis' Top Office Sales Broker in 2002 and 2004 and was recently named Broker of the Year for 2009. He is a Certified Public Accountant, an active member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, a Certified Commercial Investment Member and a member of Lambda Alpha International. Steve is a LEED Accredited Professional as designated by the United States Green Building Council. He is on the Board of Directors of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and serves as Director of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors (MAAR) Commercial Council. Steve earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Baylor University.
MICHAEL E. HARRIS Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer
Mike assumed his current role in 2004. Previously, he was a senior vice president and regional manager directly responsible for the Company’s day-to-day operations in Memphis with oversight responsibility for the Nashville, Kansas City, Baltimore and Charlotte divisions. Mike was executive vice president of Crocker Realty Trust prior to Highwoods’ acquisition of Crocker in September 1996. Before joining Crocker Realty Trust, Mike served as senior vice president, general counsel and chief financial officer of Towermarc Corporation, a privately owned real estate development firm. During his 30-year career in real estate, Mike has been intricately involved in virtually all aspects of the development, acquisition and management of commercial real estate, with principal emphasis on office, industrial/distribution and retail properties.
Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mississippi, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law, and a Master of Business Administration-Finance degree from the University of Memphis. Mike is a member of the Urban Land Institute, Lambda Alpha International Land Economic Society (past president - Memphis chapter) and a past member of the American and Arkansas Bar Associations. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank-Tennessee and Allen & Hoshall Engineering.
THOMAS HILL Vice President, Raleigh
Skip oversees a portfolio of five million square feet of office space. A 23-year commercial real estate veteran, Skip is responsible for overseeing the operations in Highwoods’ Triangle division, including all leasing, property management and development activities. Previously, Skip was Highwoods’ corporate vice president of leasing where he was responsible for overseeing the Company’s leasing activities nationally and expanding and leveraging the Company’s multi-market customer program. Skip joined Highwoods in 2002 as senior director of leasing and construction services for the Piedmont Triad Division. Skip serves as the immediate past president of the Triangle chapter of NAIOP, having served in the past as a 2004-2006 board member on the National Board of Directors for NAIOP and a past president and director of the North Carolina Triad NAIOP chapter. Skip was a past president and is an ex officio board member of the North Carolina chapter of CCIM. Currently, Skip serves on the boards of the Wake County Economic Development, the Cary Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
THEODORE J. KLINCK Chief Investment Officer
Ted joined Highwoods in March 2012. Previously, he was principal and chief investment officer with Goddard Investment Group in Atlanta. Ted has 24 years of extensive real estate experience, and prior to joining Goddard Investment he spent 16 years with Morgan Stanley Real Estate, including its predecessor companies Lend Lease and Equitable Real Estate. Ted has a strong focus on sourcing core, value-add and opportunistic real estate investments in high growth markets, particularly in the Sunbelt and has overseen the closing of more than $15 billion worth of transactions over the last ten years. Ted received a B.B.A. in Finance and Real Estate from Southern Methodist University and a M.B.A. in Finance and Real Estate from the University of Georgia.
PAUL W. KRECKMAN Vice President, Richmond
Paul oversees a portfolio of 2.6 million square feet. He has over 35 years of experience in the Richmond real estate market, first as a consultant and then as a developer. In early 1984, Paul formed his own company with a local partner and began developing their commercial investment portfolio. In September 1995, they merged with Highwoods. Paul has been a guest lecturer in graduate real estate courses at the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University. He is actively involved in a number of civic and church programs, including the Executive Committee for the local Boy Scout Council; former president of the Richmond Real Estate Group; former chairman of the annual VCU Trends Conference; and treasurer of the VCU Real Estate Circle of Excellence. Paul is currently the president of the Innsbrook Owners Association and chairman of the Architectural Review Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Syracuse University and a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Virginia.
CARMAN J. LIUZZO Vice President, Investments
Carman coordinates the Company’s real estate investment and portfolio planning process, including acquisitions and dispositions. Carman joined Highwoods in 1994 as vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer and remained in that position until December 2003. Carman is a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), where he serves as vice chairman on the Investment Management II Forum and serves on the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Credit and Capital Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), where he serves on the Triangle Management Committee (Treasurer). Carman is a member of the Finance Council for the Raleigh Catholic Diocese, a member of the Finance Council for St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he is a Eucharistic Minister and Lector, and he is on the Building Committee of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. Prior to joining Highwoods, Carman spent four years with KPMG Peat Marwick, and served as chief accounting officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises, Inc., a franchisee of 350 Hardee's restaurants and a real estate investment trust. Carman received a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
ART H. MCCANN Chief Information Officer
Art’s primary goal is the development of the Company’s overall information technology strategy and aligning the Company’s technology investments with the overall business. A 20-year business technology veteran, Art was a technology consulting manager at McGladrey & Pullen before joining Highwoods in 2000, and prior to that, he was a network manager for a non-profit organization in Washington, DC. Art earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Elon University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Art is a board member on the Society for Information Management.
JEFFREY D. MILLER Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary
Jeff joined Highwoods in 2007. Previously, he was a partner with DLA Piper US LLP and Alston & Bird LLP. Throughout his career in private practice, Jeff concentrated his practice on securities, corporate governance and related strategic matters, and served as general outside counsel to a variety of publicly-traded REITs, including Highwoods.
Jeff received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University. He is admitted to practice in North Carolina. Jeff currently serves as lead independent director of Hatteras Financial Corp., a publicly-traded mortgage REIT.
KEVIN E. PENN Chief Strategy and Administration Officer
Kevin is Chief Strategy and Administration Officer and has been with Highwoods since 1997. His responsibilities include managing the Company’s Strategic Plan which incorporates corporate performance management, investment strategy, portfolio planning, process improvement and business planning functions. He is active in the Company’s acquisitions and leads new business initiatives. In addition, Kevin oversees several of the Corporate departments including information technology, marketing and human resources. Prior to Highwoods, Kevin worked at Genentech, a leading biotechnology firm headquartered in San Francisco, and CSC Index, a management consulting firm. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, executive committee member of the OTOC (an office REIT consortium) and board member for the North Carolina Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and a Master of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
W. BRIAN REAMES Senior Vice President, Nashville
Brian oversees a portfolio of over three million square feet for the Nashville division and one million square feet in Greenville, South Carolina. Before joining Highwoods, Brian was a principal at Eakin & Smith, Inc., a Nashville-based office real estate firm, until its merger with Highwoods in 1996. Brian is a past Nashville chapter president of NAIOP and a past president of the Board of Trustees at Harding Academy in Nashville. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors of H.G. Hill Realty and Friends of Warner Parks. Brian received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University.
L. RANDY ROBERSON Vice President, Development, LEED AP
Randy oversees land-use planning, design development, cost control, construction administration, owner
representation, and customer coordination for building shell construction. Since joining Highwoods in 1995,
Randy has been responsible for the development of 4.3 million square feet of space with a total development
cost of $640 million. Prior to joining Highwoods, Randy was a senior project manager with Clancy & Theys
Construction Company and a vice president of Benchmark Construction Corporation. Randy is a graduate of
North Carolina State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.
MICHAEL D. STARCHVILLE Vice President, Asset Management
Mike is responsible for the company’s overall asset management function. As a 23-year real estate veteran, Mike has the proven ability to create value and drive operational efficiencies. He has extensive leadership experience in property management, asset management, leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, risk management, property tax, and enhanced life-cycle strategies for major capital expenditures. Prior to joining Highwoods in 2008, Mike served as vice president asset management for Crown American Realty Trust, the 2003 merging partner to Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust. Mike earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Building Owners and Managers Association. Mike has also served on the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Remediation Process Validation Committee.
GLENN E. STEPHENSON Vice President, Kansas City
Glenn oversees a portfolio of just over two million square feet of office and retail space. Prior to joining Highwoods in 1997, Glenn was general manager of SouthPark Shopping Center in Charlotte, North Carolina; regional manager with the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation--West Coast Region and general manager at Houston Galleria, a mixed-use facility in Houston, Texas, as well as NorthPark Shopping Center, a mixed-use facility, in Dallas, Texas. Glenn began his career with Federated Department Stores in 1973. Glenn earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University. He is a licensed real estate broker in the States of Kansas and Missouri as well as an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. Locally, Glenn is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Royal.
TERRY L. STEVENS Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Terry joined Highwoods in 2003 as CFO. His primary responsibilities include capital markets and treasury functions, financial reporting, financial analysis, accounting, and investor relations. Prior to joining Highwoods Terry spent nine years as chief financial officer and trustee for Crown American Realty Trust, a publicly traded REIT. Previously, he was director of financial systems development for Allied-Signal, Inc., a multi-national manufacturing and technology company that is now part of Honeywell. Terry also spent 18 years with Price Waterhouse, an international accounting firm, including seven years as an audit partner in their Baltimore and New York offices.
Terry currently serves as Trustee, member of the finance committee, and chair of the audit committee for First Potomac Realty Trust, a public REIT based in Bethesda, MD. He received his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the AICPA.
ANDY WISNIEWSKI Vice President, Pittsburgh
Andy oversees a portfolio of 1.5 million square feet. He joined Highwoods in July 2012 from CBRE’s Pittsburgh Landlord Agency Group where he worked for 24 years, the last 14 years as executive vice president. During Andy’s 24 years in the Pittsburgh market, he has managed over 11 million square feet of agency assignments consisting of more than 50 properties. This has resulted in the execution of over five million square feet of leases and investment sales with a value in excess of one billion dollars. A licensed real estate broker and a Certified Commercial Investment Member of the Commercial Real Estate Institute (CCIM), Andy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration Degree from The Pennsylvania State University.
DANIEL E. WOODWARD Vice President, Tampa
Dan oversees a portfolio of three million square feet of office space. A 25-year commercial real estate veteran, Dan is directly responsible for the Company’s day-to-day operations in Highwoods Properties’ Tampa Division, overseeing all acquisition, leasing, management, and development activities. With Highwoods since July 2006, Dan was formerly with Trammell Crow Company as senior vice president responsible for the oversight of Trammell Crow Company’s development activities in Central Florida. Dan has also held similar positions with The Pizzuti Companies in Orlando and The Vantage Companies in Tampa. Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree and MBA from the University of Florida and a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A licensed Florida Real Estate Broker, Dan is active in a variety of professional and civic organizations including past president of the Central Florida Chapter of NAIOP. He currently serves in various executive committee and board positions with the Westshore Alliance, Real Estate Investment Council, and Advisory Board for the Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies at the University of Florida.
TABITHA N. ZANE Vice President, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications
Tabitha joined Highwoods in 2002, directing the Company’s investor relations and corporate communications functions. Previously, she was vice president of investor relations for SpectraSite Communications and prior to that, director of investor relations for Spherion Corporation. Tabitha was a member of the board of directors for the National Investor Relations Institute (“NIRI”) and was a founder and the first president of the NIRI San Antonio Chapter and served on the boards of NIRI’s Charlotte and South Florida chapters. Tabitha co-chaired NIRI’s 2000 Annual Conference served on NIRI’s Annual Conference Committee in 1998 and 1999. Tabitha received her undergraduate degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

THOMAS W. ADLER
Mr. Adler has been a director of Highwoods since its initial public offering in June 1994. He is a member of the Executive and Investment Committees.
Mr. Adler is chair of Playhouse Square Real Estate Services in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Adler formerly served on the board of directors of the National Association of Realtors and the boards of governors of the American Society of Real Estate Counselors and NAREIT. Mr. Adler is a trustee of Cleveland State University, past national president of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, was actively involved in the Urban Land Institute and serves on several non-profit boards in the Cleveland area.
GENE H. ANDERSON
Mr. Anderson has been a director of the Company for 16 years and is a member of the Investment Committee.
Until June 2009, Mr. Anderson was also a senior vice president of the Company with regional oversight of the Atlanta and Piedmont Triad divisions. Mr. Anderson is managing principal of G.H. Anderson & Company, a private investment firm. He was president of Anderson Properties from 1978 until February 1997.
Mr. Anderson is a past president of the Georgia chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and is a past national board member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.
EDWARD J. FRITSCH
Ed is president and chief executive officer of Highwoods Properties and has been a director since 2001. DAVID J. HARTZELL, PhD.
David J. Hartzell has been a director of Highwoods since 2009. He is a member of the Audit and Investment Committees.
Dr. Hartzell is a Distinguished Professor in Real Estate at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He is a former vice president at Salomon Brothers Inc. in New York, where his primary focus was on institutional real estate finance and investments. Dr. Hartzell also worked as a research associate for The Urban Institute and as a financial economist for the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of Currency. He is a former president of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association.
SHERRY A. KELLETT
Ms. Kellett has been a director of Highwoods since 2005. She is chairman of the Audit Committee.
Ms. Kellett is a certified public accountant and served as senior executive vice president and corporate controller of BB&T Corporation from 1995 until her retirement in August 2003. She served as corporate controller of Southern National Corporation from 1991 until 1995 when it merged with BB&T Corporation. Ms. Kellett previously held several positions at Arthur Andersen & Co. She is a director of MidCountry Financial Corp., a private financial services holding company and is a director of Medical Properties Trust, Inc., a publicly-traded medical office REIT.
MARK F. MULHERN
Mr. Mulhern has been a director since January 2012. He is a member of the Audit Committee.
Mr. Mulhern has served as chief financial officer of Exco Resources, Inc. (NYSE:XCO), an exploration and production company, since March 2013. Mr. Mulhern served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Progress Energy, Inc. from September 2008 to July 2012. He joined Progress Energy in 1996 as vice president and controller. Before joining Progress Energy, Mr. Mulhern was the chief financial officer at Hydra Co Enterprises, the independent power subsidiary of Niagara Mohawk. He also spent eight years at Price Waterhouse, serving a wide variety of manufacturing and service businesses. Mr. Mulhern serves on the Edison Electric Institute Financial Executive Advisory Committee and is a director of the state organization of Habitat for Humanity - North Carolina. Mr. Mulhern is a certified public accountant, a certified management accountant and a certified internal auditor.
L. GLENN ORR JR.
Mr. Orr has been a director of Highwoods since February 1995. He is chairman of the Compensation/Governance Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee.
Mr. Orr has been president and chief executive officer of Orr Holdings, LLC since 2007 and was the managing director of The Orr Group from 1995 to 2007. Mr. Orr served as president and chief executive officer of The Orr Group from 1995 to 2006. Mr. Orr was chairman of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of Southern National Corporation from 1990 until its merger with BB&T Corporation in 1995. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Forsyth Bank and Trust Co., president of Community Bank in Greenville, S.C. and president of the North Carolina Bankers Association. Mr. Orr is a member of the boards of directors of Medical Properties Trust, Inc., a publicly-traded medical office REIT, General Parts International, Inc., a national auto parts distributor and Broyhill Management Fund, an investment firm. He is a past chairman of the Wake Forest University board of Trustees.
O. TEMPLE SLOAN JR. Chairman
Mr. Sloan is chairman of the Board of Directors, a position he has held since March 1994. He is chairman of the Executive Committee and a member of the Compensation/Governance and Investment Committees.
Mr. Sloan is chairman of General Parts International, Inc. He is also chair of Trail Creek Investments, Inc., and Sheser Creek Company, private investment firms. Mr. Sloan also serves as a director of Golden Corral Corporation, a private restaurant chain. Mr. Sloan retired as lead independent director of Bank of America Corporation in May 2009 and Lowe’s Companies Inc. in May 2011.
