Care Investment Trust Inc. (“Care” or the “Company”) is an externally managed real estate investment trust (“REIT”) formed to invest in healthcare-related real estate and mortgage debt. Care was incorporated in Maryland in March 2007, and completed its initial public offering in June 2007. The Company seeks to invest in a wide range of healthcare-related facilities, including medical office buildings, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, alzheimers facilities, hospitals, continuing care retirement communities and other healthcare facilities through the origination expertise of its external manager, CIT Healthcare LLC (“Manager”).
As of March 31, 2010, Care maintained a diversified healthcare real estate investment portfolio consisting of $54.4 million in real estate owned through joint ventures, $100.8 million invested in wholly owned real estate and $9.8 million in healthcare related mortgage loans held at the lower of cost of market. Care’s current investments in healthcare real estate include medical office buildings, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities and alzheimers facilities. The Company’s mortgage portfolio is primarily composed of first mortgages on skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and mixed-use facilities.
