    for Cultural Enhancement

      Steve May to lead Bank's Renewal and Enhancement
      of Unique Culture and Customer Service
      Umpqua Bank, one of Oregon's leading community banks and a
    subsidiary of Umpqua Holdings Corporation (Nasdaq:UMPQ), is taking
    bold steps to further enhance its corporate culture by creating a new
    executive position dedicated solely to this task.
      The company announced that Steve May has been promoted to the
    position of Executive Vice President of Cultural Enhancement.
      This one-of-a-kind position reflects Umpqua Bank's ongoing
    dedication to improving its distinctive culture that is centered on
    providing the very best in customer service. As the new Executive Vice
    President for Cultural Enhancement, May will supervise the continued
    evolution and expansion of the company's culture throughout all of its
    operations. Among the programs that May will oversee are:
      --  Umpqua Bank's Universal Associates program, which trains and
      empowers store associates with the knowledge and tools to
      provide every customer with information and assistance on a
      full range of banking services.
      --  The Return-On-Quality (ROQ) system that measures and
      quantifies several components of exceptional customer service
      both in the stores and backroom departments.
      --  Enhancement of in-store features, including Umpqua blend
      coffee, Internet stations, postal centers, investment centers,
      and daily newsstands.
      In his new role, May also will manage the Bank's employee training
    programs and human resources operations. He also will be responsible
    for facilities management, which will include the siting of new stores
    and remodels of existing locations.

      May joined Umpqua Bank in 1994 as Executive Vice President of
    Retail Banking and helped oversee the development of the Bank's
    culture and service delivery models as it grew from $130 million to
    more than $1.4 billion in assets. Prior to joining Umpqua Bank, May
    spent 20 years in various retail management positions with U.S. Bank.
    May holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration from
    Oregon State University.

    The new store model will be unveiled later this year and implemented
    in a new flagship store in the Portland metropolitan area to be opened
    in 2003.
