Report: Amazon prepares to launch wine business

By

In a small example of just how varied Amazon.com Inc.'s business interests are, the online retail giant is reportedly at work on adding new products to its site, including various types of wine and two new e-books.

The Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 11 that Napa Valley Vintners expected Amazon to begin selling wine sometime between the end of September and the beginning of October.

Terry Hall, communications director of Napa Valley Vintners, said in the report that the organization was already beginning to hold workshops for its members on how to sell through Amazon.

This is not Amazon's first foray into the wine business. The company reportedly spent $30 million in the late 1990s to take a 45% stake in the now-defunct Wineshopper.com.

One hurdle the company faced in the business is that only certain states allow out-of-state wine shipments.

According to the Journal, Amazon will work with New Vine Logistics, a wine fulfillment company, to oversee its wine shipments.

In a separate Sept. 11 report, the Journal also reported that Amazon would offer biographies on both Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama through its Kindle e-reader. Obama's e-book is already on sale on Amazon, and McCain's will be available Sept. 15.

Lyons Press, a branch of Morris Communications Corp.'s Globe Pequot Press publishing unit, is publishing the e-books and will only release in print the biography of the woman whose husband wins the presidential election in November, according to the report.
