The NRC has issued FirstEnergy Corp. a 20-year license renewal for the dual-unit Beaver Valley nuclear plant in Shippingport, Pa. The new licenses will expire Jan. 29, 2036, and May 27, 2047, respectively. Each unit produces about 910 MW. One began operation in 1976, the other in 1987. The decision to renew the pressurized-water reactor licenses came after safety and environmental reviews of the application submitted in August 2007. In June, the NRC staff concluded that there were no safety concerns that would preclude license renewal and that the applicant had effectively demonstrated the capability to manage the effects of plant aging, the commission said in a news release. On Sept. 16, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, an independent body of technical experts that advises the NRC, issued its recommendation that license renewal for Beaver Valley should be approved. A couple of weeks prior to the Beaver Valley extension, the NRC approved license renewals for both Exelon Corp.'s Three Mile Island facility in Pennsylvania and Dominion Resources Inc.'s North Anna plant in Virginia. The Beaver Valley licenses represent the 56th and 57th reactor licenses renewed by the NRC. There are now 13 applications for 20 units under active review by the agency. |
