Unitrin Inc. said in a Form 8-K filed Nov. 4 that Richard Vie will retire as an employee and executive officer of the company and will step down as chairman of its board, effective Dec. 31.

Unitrin President and CEO Donald Southwell will become board chairman, effective Jan. 1, 2010. Vie will remain a member of Unitrin's board.

Vie has been chairman of the board since January 1999.
